Aiguillon, Emmanuel-Armand de Vignerot, duke d'
- Aiguillon, Emmanuel-Armand de Vignerot, duke d'
(1720-1788)
statesman and minister
A great-nephew of Marie-Madeleine, duchess d'Aiguillon, a niece of Cardinal richelieu (who also had encouraged the development of charities and missions in Canada), Emmanuel-Armand de Vigernot served as governor of brittany in 1753. There, he brought about the opposition of the parlement and the nobility when he attempted a fiscal reform in the central government. This caused his recall in 1769. After the fall of the duke of choiseul, Aiguillon was put in charge of foreign affairs, forming a triumvirate with maupeou and terray. He could not, however, preserve the accomplishments of choiseul or prevent the partition of Poland; he fell from power early in the reign of Louis XVI. His son, Armand de Vignerot du Plessis de Richelieu (1761-1800), also duke of Aiguillon, was a delegate to the Estates General in 1789 who, after having opposed the measures of the Legislative Assembly, left for exile in Germany.
